The Institute of Public Affairs’ Daniel Wild says the figures released on Wednesday by the ABS detailing the state of Australia’s economy show we live in a divided country and “have never all been in this together”.
Australia’s economy is officially in recession after the June quarter data revealed the country’s GDP had shrunk by 7 per cent due to the COVID crisis, representing an annual decline of 6.3 per cent.
“We are living in two Australias, where those in the private, productive parts of the economy have been smashed - small businesses, self-employed, young Australians,” Mr Wild told Sky News host Andrew Bolt.
“Whereas those in the public sector and bureaucrats have not only been protected but they’re flourishing.
“Some analysis we did at the Institute of Public Affairs of the ABS data found that wages in the private sector have gone down $5.9 billion in the June quarter, but they’ve gone up in the public sector by $738 million.
“We are in a fundamentally divided country.”
