ALASKA PENINSULA, ALASKA — One of Alaska’s most active volcanos will be erupting soon, according to experts.

Warnings have been issued by the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) of the imminent eruption of Pavlof Volcano, located on the Alaska Peninsula. The AVO is an organization formed to study and monitor volcanic activity in the state.

The AVO increased an alert level for the volcano from “normal” — green, to “advisory” — yellow on July 1.

The volcano erupted earlier this year in March triggering a red alert, the highest of four levels.

That eruption sent an ash cloud as high as 37,000 feet into the atmosphere and covered villages to the northeast — including Nelson Lagoon — with a layer of ash that was as much as two-thirds of an inch thick.

Reports from nearby scientific and coast guard observers suggest that the eruption produced volcanic mud flows and lava flows. The eruption was the first for Pavlof since November 2014 and noted by the AVO as the most energetic since 1996.

Pavlof is one of the most consistently active volcanoes in the Aleutian arc. It has erupted six times since 1996 and 21 times in the past 50 years.
