Chinese President Xi Jinping met with his Republic of Korea (ROK) counterpart Park Geun-hye on the sidelines of the fourth Nuclear Security Summit in Washington D.C. on Thursday and exchanged views on bilateral relations and major international and regional issues of their common concern.

Xi said the relations between the two countries have been maintaining steady and rapid growth since the establishment of diplomatic relations 24 years ago. China attaches great importance to the China–ROK relations and has always been putting the bilateral relations with ROK in top priority.

Xi said that a lot of important consensuses reached between Xi and Park are being comprehensively implemented and many positive results have been achieved. It is a common historical mission of the two countries to maintain, consolidate and develop the bilateral relations.

China is willing to deepen the cooperation with the ROK in all the fields so as to ensure that the bilateral relations with the ROK grow soundly and steadily in the right track, Xi said.

Xi stressed that the two sides should maintain high-level exchanges, take full advantage of a series of strategic communication mechanisms for close coordination, accommodate each other's concerns and respect each other's sovereignty, safety and development interests. China welcomes the participation of ROK in the construction of "One Belt, One Road" initiatives, said Xi.

The two sides should quicken the strategic links of national development strategies of the two countries, carry out the free trade agreement between the two countries, deepen financial cooperation, push forward the construction of the China-ROK Industrial Park for substantial progresses and advance the integration of East-Asian economy, Xi said.

Xi said the two sides should expand people-to-people exchange and give mutual trust to each other for hosting the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics by ROK and 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics by China.

China encourages communication between the people of the two countries and the two sides should stay in close communication within the mechanisms of the United Nations, Group 20 and Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and so on, said Xi.

Park Geun-hye said she agrees with the evaluation of Xi on the bilateral relations. The close high-level exchanges between the two countries reflects the importance of the bilateral relations of the ROK with China.

She said the ROK pays high attention to the bilateral relations with China and is willing to make the strategic partnership move forward constantly on the basis of deep mutual-trust.

Park Geun-hye said she agrees to enhance high-level strategic communication and close communication with all levels in all fields between the two countries.

Under the current economic situation, it is more necessary for the two sides to strengthen cooperation on economic and trade fields, quicken the step to carry out the free trade agreement between the two countries, and link the "Eurasia Initiative" and the "One Belt One Road" construction, said Park.

She said that the Republic of Korea supports close people-to-people exchange between the two countries as well and will support the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

Xi Jinping welcomed Park to attend the 2016 G20 Hangzhou summit in September. Park accepted the invitation and said she is willing to make positive contributions to the success of the summit.

Meanwhile, Xi Jinping called for dialogue to resolve the predicament on the Korean Peninsula and the Chinese side stands ready to make efforts in a constructive way to resume dialogue within the framework of six-party talks. While Park said that she is willing to maintain close communication with China on the related issues.
