THE RUNDOWN | President Donald Trump has canceled his visit to Denmark scheduled for September 2nd due to the Danish rejection of his offer to purchase Greenland, a decision that left the leader of the Nordic nation "annoyed and surprised."
Despite praising the Danes as “incredible people” in a Tweet Tuesday, he explained that he was postponing his trip to Denmark based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland...”
He nevertheless thanked Frederiksen for saving their countries the trip’s expense, adding that he “look[s] forward to rescheduling sometime in the future.”
Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen told reporters she was "surprised" and that it was a "shame" that the US president canceled his state visit, but added that the two nations remain strong allies.
"Denmark and the US are not in crisis, the US is one of our closest allies."
The Scandinavian country's invitation to visit "remains open," she said.
