Dimitrios Shipwreck - Unique Things To Do in Greece (Shipwreck in Gythio, Greece).

We discovered this lonely ship while looking for unique things to do in Greece which made an emergency docking at Gythio on December 4th, 1980 because the captain needed to be hospitalized. However, after the ship′s docking, financial problems arose with the crew, as did various engine problems so the ship remained docked until June 1981.

It was declared unsafe due to wear on the docking ropes and water entering her hull. The port authorities asked for it to be moved to an anchorage outside the port for safety reasons, but the owners did not respond until November 1981.

The ship was swept away due to severe weather conditions and it was temporarily anchored. But the temporary anchorage did not last for long, as the ship was swept away again and finally stranded at its current location on the beach at Valtaki on 23 December 1981. The ship was then simply abandoned there and no attempts were made to recover her.

Rumors of it being an illegal trade ship transporting tobacco from Italy to Turkey and back are strong in this region which leads to part of the reason it may have been left here.

Another legend is that it’s a ghost ship due to the fact it was anchored in Gythio and with no crew aboard, it set off to sea, landing 2 nautical miles away from the beach it’s at today.
