The Danish Villages of Elk Horn and Kimballton, Iowa are the two largest rural Danish settlements in the United States. The Villages boast an authentic Danish Windmill, The Museum of Danish America, and a sculpture of The Little Mermaid.
Elk Horn is the host to the only authentic, operating Danish windmill in the United States. The mill was purchased from Norre Snede, Denmark, shipped and reconstructed in 1976 with the help of over 300 volunteers. In the 40 years that the Danish Villages have enjoyed the mill, it has become one of the most popular and successful tourist attractions in Iowa.
