Garden for Bellies. How to start your kitchen garden.
Flowers, spring, sun.Green leaves. Grass in the fields. It is time to think about growing your own vegetables. Garden for Bellies.
I live on a small farm in Denmark. I want to live a good life. For me this is about living in harmony with nature in the best way I know. One part of this is growing my own vegetables. I have good soil just outside my living house. I have animals nearby in my stable and in my fields. From the animals I have manure that contains nutrients for my soil. Macronutrients for plant are N (Nitrogen), P (Phosphorous) and K (Potassium).
The year has for seasons, summer, autumn, winter and spring. Spring is the time where the grass starts growing, flowers blossom, the trees have leaves again, the birds sing long hours, and my sheep’s have lambs. This is the time to start your small garden.
During the winter you must think about what you want to grow: Carrots, cabbage, rot beets, potatoes, maize, turnip rooted celery, peas, cauliflower, borecole, broccoli, salad, parsley, onion, chives etc. and do not forget to grow some flowers like e.g. sunflowers. When you have decided you need to find a place to buy the seeds or plants.
But the real work of the garden is preparing the soil and avoiding too much weed during the summer. I grew up in the countryside and I am used to use the soil in the oldest and most traditional way. I want to fight weed and supply nutrients in term of manure from my animals by digging the soil in spring. My tools are spade, wheelbarrow, fork, rake, hoe, and a few meters of string. The rest is simple work. When you have finished to dig your garden soil, and planed the surface with the rake, it is time to take a break and wait.
All the weed seeds you have in your soil will start to grow, as you have disturbed and awakened them. In one or two weeks they will emerge from the soil surface, quite easy to get rid of with your rake and hoe.
Now if the weather is dry it is time to sow your seeds. If the weather is rainy it is time to plant. Having finished the planting and the sowing, you need to consider treats form insects during the summer. Some of these are: White butterfly, Caterpillar, and Carrot Fly. All of these you can avoid by putting op a simple insect net. The net also helps to raise temperature a bit if cold, and to keep moisture in the soil during periods of little rain.
In my garden I have Agropyrum Repens (False Speargrass) that I need to fight for several weeks in spring by handpicking and by hoe. Weed plants with two cotyledons growing from seeds in the soil are few due to the soil treatment (False seedbed treatment) with the rake.
Setting up the net is easy. I use 3 m slim willow sticks to build a tunnel. Then the net is pulled over and fixed with stones.
What to do – for the rest of the summer? Well if your are lucky – not much. Just enjoy the plants growing.
Have a good summer.
