Genocide in Bosnia - 25 Years After Srebrenica & Current Developments in the Balkans

On the 11th of July 2020 it will be 25 years since the Srebrenica genocide that was committed by the Bosnian Serb Army. The genocide took the lives of over 8.000 Bosniak Muslims, mostly men and boys. Further 25.000-30.000 women and children were driven out of their homes. To commemorate the victims of these atrocities, European Muslim Network (EMN) is organizing an online event to address the history of the first genocide that took place on the European soil after the Second World War, and its impact that stills manifests itself in the Balkans today. Moreover, the conversation will focus also on the widespread genocide denial as it affects the current political and societal sentiments related to religious diversity and inter-ethnic relations of the region.

At the same time, this conversation will be a kick-off event for the EMN Conversation Series that we will be from now on organizing on a regular basis.

Speaker: Prof. Hariz Halilovich

Prof. Halilovich is world-renowned for his research on genocide, refugees, and migration. He is a Principal Research Fellow and an ARC Future Fellow in the School of Global, Urban and Social Studies an RMIT University in Melbourne. Moreover, Prof. Halilovich is the author of the award-winning book Places of Pain: Forced Displacement, Popular Memory and Trans-local Identities in Bosnian War-torn Communities, New York, Oxford. Host: Ivan Ejub Kostić

Ivan Ejub Kostić is a PhD candidate at the Faculty of Political Sciences, University of Belgrade. He graduated from the Faculty of Philology at the Department of Oriental Studies, Arabic Language and Literature.

He is one of the founders of the Balkan Centre for the Middle East and became its Executive Director in 2013. He co-authored the book Persecuted Islam published in 2013, and in 2019 he edited the books Contemporary Islamic Thought and Religion, Belief and Civic Identity.

He is a member of the board of trustees of the European Muslim Network, the Editorial Board of the Journal of Religious Sciences “Kom” and is the editor-in-chief of the regional online platform for contemporary Islamic thought and culture Algoritam. He is also a regular contributor to the Yearbook of Muslims in Europe, as well as to the European Islamophobia Report.
