Rudy Giuliani declared himself the hero of the Ukraine scandal on Thursday as U.S. officials blame him for initiating the whole thing.'It is impossible that the whistle-blower is a hero and I'm not. And I will be the hero! These morons—when this is over, I will be the hero,' Giuliani told The Atlantic Thursday morning. The president's personal lawyer is at the center of a whistle-blower's complaint that alleges Donald Trump pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelesnky to investigate the business dealings of Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden in order to gain dirt on his political rival.Trump released on Wednesday an unredacted transcript of the call, which shows he offered Attorney General Bill Barr and Giuliani's assistance to Ukraine in a potential probe into Hunter Biden's business involvement in the country. In the complaint, the whistle-blower – who has no direct knowledge of the July 25 call between Trump and Zelensky – claims that State Department officials were 'deeply concerned' about Giuliani's conversations with Ukrainian leaders.'I'm not acting as a lawyer. I'm acting as someone who has devoted most of his life to straightening out government,' a winded Giuliani said in his interview with The Atlantic. 'Anything I did should be praised.'Officials revealed earlier this week that after former Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation concluded this Spring, Giuliani turned his attention to Ukraine – including pushing for personnel changes at the embassy and requesting meetings with those working for Zelensky.Marie Yovanovitch, the former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, became one of Giuliani's primary targets, as he accused her of playing a secret role in exposing former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and spouting off conspiracy theories. She was ordered back to Washington months before her three-year assignment in Ukraine was up, and several officials expressed frustration with the move and Giuliani's involvement in Ukraine relations.Giuliani also insisted he only ever got involved with Ukraine because the State Department requested he do so, but officials – even some of the president's closest allies – claim otherwise.'Rudy – he did all of this,' one U.S. official told the Washington Post earlier this week. 'This s**tshow that we're in – it's him injecting himself into the process.'A former senior White House official told The Atlantic Thursday that the 'entire thing' was just 'Rudy putting s**t in Trump's head,' and an aide to a senior House Republican said Giuliani is a 'moron.'
