Democratic Party of Korea candidate Moon Jae-in took time at a campaign event on Thursday to focus on the rising potential of the Korean Wave.
The cultural phenomenon first gained popularity in Asia in the early 1990s with Korean movies, dramas and K-pop, but has since expanded to include food, musicals and fashion.
"Moon met with a group of influential artists and CEOs to talk with them about the rising trends in the industry... and hear their thoughts on ways to expand the influence of the Korean Wave around the world."
Moon said that, if elected, he will provide more government support to take the craze to the next level.
He noted that over 55 million foreigners have seen K-pop concerts in their home countries... and that YouTube videos by K-pop stars are garnering millions of views.
"The size of this industry is immense, so the government needs to give it systematic and institutional support, especially as the industry is expected to have a bigger role in the fourth industrial revolution."
Moon wrapped up the day with a campaign rally in Goyang, Gyeonggi-do Province, where he urged area residents to vote for a change of government.
