2. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Sergey Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister:
++OVERLAID WITH AUDIO OF ENGLISH TRANSLATION++
"Today, we've had a bilateral meeting with Rex Tillerson in the State Department and we have just been received by President Trump, together with him. First of all, we discussed our cooperation on the international arena. It turned out that despite all well-known difficulties, our countries can and should contribute jointly to the settlement of the most urgent issues in international affairs. We discussed Syria in great detail in the context of the ideas that have been put forth regarding the setting up of de-escalation areas. We've got a common understanding regarding the fact that that should be a step that would contribute to the cessation of violence throughout the territory of Syria."

4. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Sergey Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister:
++OVERLAID WITH AUDIO OF ENGLISH TRANSLATION++
"We agreed to work together within the framework of the Astana format, where the U.S. is an observer. We appreciated the constructive contribution of the U.S. at the latest meeting. We will continue cooperating within the framework of the Geneva process, which is supposed to resume next week... We hope that all the participants of those talks will be constructive, both the government and all opposition groups."

STORYLINE:
Vladimir Putin's top diplomat, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, spoke to reporters following his visit to the White House Wednesday morning to meet with President Donald Trump.
Earlier, Lavrov entered the White House from its exclusive West Executive entrance, out of range for reporters to ask questions. The meeting marked Trump's highest level face-to-face contact with a Russian government official since taking office.
The talks come one day after Trump fired the FBI director, who was overseeing an investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election.
Before that session, Lavrov stopped at the State Department to see Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who said the get-together was a chance for the two to "continue our dialogue" and "exchange of views" that they started last month in Moscow. During that trip, Tillerson said relations with Russia were at a low and needed to be rebuilt.
A Russian plan to stabilize Syria after more than six years of civil war was the most urgent foreign policy topic on the Trump-Lavrov agenda.
