Madrid's restaurants and cafes have found a new clientele in the hundreds of French tourists escaping the COVID-19 restrictions imposed on the local hospitality sector in their country, as seen on Thursday.
The terraces of cafes and restaurants in the centre of Madrid were full, with many of their clientele made up of French residents.
“[In France] actually you can't go with your friends to restaurants or bars. So you just have to have an apartment to go with other people. So that's why you have quite little social life," said Samuel, a young Frenchman.
"The situation in France is… I mean, they are having more lockdowns, people are staying more inside. The restaurants, the bars, everything is closed. So it is really nice to be in Spain, to be able to, to still be able to go back [to bars and restaurants]. I mean, go to coffee shops, and see people," said Laurence.
To prevent an increase of COVID-19 infections, the French government decreed the closure of bars and restaurants three months ago. The country is under a curfew that runs from 18:00 (17:00 GMT) to 06:00 (05:00 GMT).
In Madrid, meanwhile, bars and restaurants can operate with limitations on the number of customers per table and the curfew runs from 22:00 (21:00 GMT) to 06:00 (05:05 GMT).
