Do you like the outdoors or have you ever dreamt of sleeping under star-studded skies far away from civilization? In this case hang on and let me explain how you can enjoy nature in its best form.
In only a few of all european countries, you are legally allowed to access nature without any restrictions or stay overnight wherever you wish. This legal right is known as the ‘Freedom to Roam’ or ‘Everybody's Right’. In this episode, I will talk about the right of public access in the nordic countries.
In Northern Europe, the freedom to roam was practiced since ancient times and as an ancient basic right it is protected by law in Norway (allemannsretten), Sweden (allemansrätten) and Finland (jokamiehenoikeudet). Although this right also exists in Iceland (almannaréttur), it is highly restricted due to the vulnerability of nature and the decreasing number of tourists. You are for example not allowed to camp outside designated camping areas in Iceland (which is allowed in Norway, Sweden and Finland under certain regulations). In contrast to its nordic neighbors, Denmark has no legal right of this kind.
The mentioned rules and regulations are not meant to be legal advice and can change in the course of time. Thus, you should always check for updated information on official sites of respective countries:
