Eight beaches in India have been awarded the coveted ‘Blue Flag’ certification by an eminent international jury, which comprises members of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The beaches selected for the certification are: Kappad (Kerala), Shivrajpur (Gujarat), Ghoghla (Diu), Kasarkod and Padubidri (Karnataka), Rushikonda (Andhra Pradesh), Golden (Odisha) and Radhanagar (Andaman & Nicobar Islands).

The ‘Blue Flag’ is a certification that can be obtained by a beach, marina, or sustainable boating tourism operator, and serves as an eco-label. The certification is awarded by the Denmark-based non-profit Foundation for Environmental Education, which sets stringent environmental, educational, safety-related and access-related criteria that applicants must meet and maintain. It is awarded annually to beaches and marinas in FEE member countries.

The Blue Flag programme was started in France in 1985 and in areas out of Europe in 2001. The programme promotes sustainable development in freshwater and marine areas through four main criteria: water quality, environmental management, environmental education and safety.
Forty-seven countries currently participate in the program, and 4,573 beaches, marinas, and boats have this certification.

Radhanagar Beach is one of the most famous attractions in Havelock Island and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands itself. Commonly known as Beach No. 7, Radhanagar has been given the title of the best beach in Asia and the 7th best beach in the world by Time Magazine in 2004. The beach is also included in the Top 25 beaches in Asia by Tripadvisor’s Traveller’s Choice Awards in 2016.

Needless to say, it is one of the most spectacular beaches you will visit on your trip to Andaman. Hugged with Coconut trees from all sides and covered with tropical jungle from both the sides, the Radhanagar Beach opens up a world of complete serenity and relaxation for its visitors.

As soon as you enter from the gate, you are greeted by one of the most spectacular sceneries the island has to offer. A panoramic view of the sea complemented by soft white sand, stretching along as far as your eyes can see, suddenly lifts your mood and gives a feeling of rejuvenation. The emerald blue waters with just the right amount of splash combined with perfect blue sky meshing into the horizon make you want to go for a dip, almost immediately.

There are a lot of huts, benches, and chairs scattered around the beach, along with tall trees that give you a place to relax, take in the beauty and unwind with some snacks and drinks. One of the best things about this is that you are allowed to take food and water inside the gates, so you can sit around with your friends and family and enjoy the view, while the kids play in the sand.

The double story hut at the center of the beach provides a complete view of the sea in front and is a great place to capture photographs.

Radhanagar is one of the few beaches in Andaman, where there are no restrictions on swimming. The waves are medium and don’t have too much current. Moreover, the depth of the sea is adequate and transcends gradually, so you can enjoy long hours of playing in the ocean with your loved ones.

If you like swimming and need to go for a dip, there’s no better place in Havelock than this. Lifeguards are stationed near the beach during opening hours who constantly surveil the area, so you can easily get help in case of any mishaps.

To ensure the safety of tourists, it is not advised to go too deep into the sea. A great distance for swimming is 10 meters, beyond that the water currents and waves start to get a little rough.

Must do activities:
