It is anticipated that approximately a third of EU, EEA and Swiss nationals presently travel to the UK utilizing national identity cards, instead of passports. Nevertheless, on 01 October 2021, the rules regarding entry to the UK with an EU, EEA or Swiss national identity card will transform.

Up until 30 September 2021, all EU, EEA and Swiss citizens can utilize their national identity card to come to the UK. But, from Friday 01 October 2021, this will no longer be feasible for many EU, EEA and Swiss citizens. As an alternative, a valid passport need to be shown at the UK border. The passport need to be valid for the complete period of the traveller’s stay in the UK.

On 25 August 2021, the UK government revised its guidance to validate that EU, EEA and Swiss citizens who applied to the EU Settlement Scheme before the 30 June 2021 cut off date, but have not yet attained an outcome, can carry on to utilize their national identity card to come to the UK after 01 October 2021, while they are expecting an outcome on their application.

Please keep in mind that if your application is pending, UK border officers will be able to verify your pending status automatically at the UK border utilizing the documents registered, so your travel in and out of the UK will not be impacted while your application is being processed by the UK Home office.
