Diego Maradona dead aged 60 after cardiac arrest
Diego Maradona has died at the age of 60 after suffering a cardiac arrest. The World Cup winner passed away at his home in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on Wednesday afternoon. Earlier this month, Maradona was hospitalised and required surgery after suffering a blood clot on his brain. After being discharged from hospital, he was taken to a recovery clinic where he was treated for alcohol dependency.
Maradona is regarded as one of the greatest players of all time after guiding Argentina to success at the World Cup in 1986. The tournament is also famous for Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ goal which helped knock England out at the quarter-final stage.
In that same game, Maradona was also responsible for scoring one of the greatest goals in World Cup history as he dribbled from his own half through England’s entire defence. Maradona also won several trophies during his 21-year club career with Boca Juniors, Barcelona and Napoli. During his time at Napoli, he helped the club win their first-ever Serie A title in 1987 before winning the league trophy again in 1990. But whilst in Italy, Maradona had become addicted to cocaine and was banned for 15 months in 1991 after failing a drugs test.
Speaking in 2014 about his drug use, Maradona said: ‘I gave my opponents a big advantage due to my illness. Do you know the player I could have been if I hadn’t taken drugs? ‘I am 53 going on 78 because my life hasn’t been normal. I’ve lived 80 [years] with the life I’ve gone through.’ Maradona was also thrown out of Argentina’s squad at the 1994 World Cup after testing positive for taking ephedrine, a stimulant that helps clear the respiratory system. The Argentine had also struggled with weight issues towards the end of his playing career and had gastric bypass surgery in 2005.
Maradona had managed at club level with Al Wasl FC in the United Arab Emirates, Dorados in Mexico’s second division, and, more recently, with Gimnasia de La Plata last year. Maradona became manager of Argentina’s national team in 2008 and guided the team to the World Cup in 2010 where they were knocked out by Germany in the quarter-finals.
Following the news of Maradona’s death, Argentina’s president, Alberto Fernandez, declared three days of national mourning. ‘You took us to the top of the world. You made us immensely happy. You were the greatest of them all,’ he said. ‘Thank you for having existed, Diego. We’re going to miss you all our lives.
