Less than half a century ago, the area Shenzhen occupies was a sleepy little market town occupied by 30,000 people.
NOW Shenzhen is a coastal city in the south of Guangdong Province.
It is only 41 kilometers from Hong Kong.
Benefiting from the superior location and China's reform and opening-up policy, Shenzhen has become a modern and international metropolis since 1978.
Of its residents, over 95% are Han Chinese, with the city's dramatic growth fueled almost entirely by internal migration.
Since the 1980s, Shenzhen has grown from a fishing town of 30,000 people into a world city and a center for manufacturing, specializing in electronics and telecommunications.
Dubbed as "China Silicon", today's Shenzhen gathers more than 14,000 high-tech companies including Huawei, Lenovo and Tencent.
It also becomes the innovation hub as a new generation of start-ups emerging, which makes it the most competitive and innovative city in China.
The city also features contemporary buildings, such as the 600m-tall skyscraper Ping An International Finance Centre, and a number of amusement parks.

When ascending a skyscraper, it might be hard to imagine that the view below used to be small villages.
In this young, active, and creative city, you will never get bored of the stunning architecture, interesting theme parks, and restaurants offering gourmet food from all over the world.
Shenzhen is also a sleepless city.
At night, the view of the downtown area is possibly more beautiful than it is in the daytime.
