Flying to Iceland and the start of our Ring Road Travels.
We flew direct ABZ - KEF with Iceland Air. With only 22 people on the propeller plane it was a quiet and safe flight. Iceland Air provide in flight entertainment via iPads with the typical films being Happy Feet and Frozen. A 2h 20minute flight landed us in Keflavik Intl, a 40 minute drive to Reykjavik.
We chose SIXT car hire purely based on price £233 for the week in a small Chevrolet 5 door that took 5000kr to fill. SIXT is the first stop on the free terminal bus or a 3 minute walk.
Night 1 Accommodation: KEX Hostel Reykjavik - LOVE the theming but too noisy for the beginning of long drives the next day, also if you're shy this hostel is not for you... old communal open showers!
Day 2 was the start of our ring road driving from Reykjavik to Hofn. Our original plan was to stop at Vik for the night but with little or no accommodation it was VERY expensive (£200 a night for a hotel).
Stop 1. Seljalandsfoss
Stop 2: Selvallalaug
Stop 3. Skogafoss
Stop 4: Vik Black Beach
Stop 5: Jokusarlon Glacier Lagoon
Stop 6: Hofn
We planned stopping at the plane crash but had difficulty finding it with our gps.
All stops were worth it but wish we had more time between Reykjavik and Vik.
Night 2 Accommodation; Hofn HI Hostel - Dislike! It was dark and old and for the limited time we stayed here I wouldn't say it was worth £38 a night. You had to make your own bed and collect duvet & pillow cases and arriving at 10:30pm after 14 hours hours on the road we just wanted sleep. We did get a private kitchen and bathroom in room 118.
Everywhere we visited was free of charge.
I advise if you rent a car in Iceland to save credit card charges when you get home buy and N1 gas card. It can only be used at N1 stations but it was the easiest way for us to fill up. 3000kr = 12L. There are few gas stations on the ring road & only in main towns for example; we collected the car full and the first time we filled up was at Hofn.
YES food is expensive even in a BONUS store (£18 for fish and chips at skogafoss waterfall) but so is all of Iceland unfortunately as a tourist this is the disadvantage to us with the country being independent.
