IS VEJLE DENMARK'S CUTEST TOWN: Danish Travel to Vejle, Denmark
#Danmark #Denmark #Vejle

In this video, we explore the lovely town of Vejle, Denmark. It’s quite possibly the cutest Danish town in Denmark.

Since our earliest videos, we have gotten comments that we have to visit this Danish city. So we booked a train to finally visit Vejle. We decided to stay at the Best Wester Torvehallerne and highly recommend it.

Mike talks about the origins of Vejle and it’s gorgeous Rådhus or City Hall. The site where City Hall stands today was actually a Dominican monastery until the 1500’s, and in fact the bell that called the friars to mass is now the bell in the tower today!
The granite sculptures of Vejle City Hall were installed in the 1950’s to represent the 4 occupations that define Vejle - trade, crafts, agriculture and industry.
Next we start the trip to Vejle with a walk down the heart of the city - the pedestrian street called Vejle Gågade.

The church is a gorgeous structure that was built in the period between 1240 and 1280 which makes it the oldest building in Vejle. Saint Nikolai’s Church has been renovated and restored several times throughout the ages, and includes part of the original northern wall. Our friend Daniel explains the sinister history of the walls of Sct. Nikolai Kirke and what the 23 tiny holes were originally for.

We move on and visit Vejle harbor, one of the most picturesque places in the city. The old industrial harbor sits on Vejle fjord.

While at Vejle fjord, we check out some of the most interesting architecture in Denmark.
Fjordenhus and Bølgen, or The Wave, are equally striking with dramatic designs to house luxury apartments facing down the fjord.

It was surprising to us that the pedestrian street and shopping district of Vejle were about a kilometer from the beautiful harbor and fjord, but it makes sense given the city’s history as an industrial town until recent decades.

The city grew around the confluence of the Vejle and Grejs Rivers and not the harbor and Vejle River provided power for the city’s textile mills. They even appear on the city coat of arms.

The Vejle river also marks the southern end of Gågade, with a number of cafes and restaurants and a large shopping center. There, we returned to walk along shop-lined streets and enjoy a nice weekend stroll with locals

Next we check out a portal to old street of Vejle to see how the city has continued to grow since its founding in the Middle Ages. Then we walk to one of the coolest streets in Vejle, Midtpunkt.

Just past Midtpunkt we reached the top of Gågade at Nørretorv, where one branch of the Grejs river now runs along the street.
One thing we love about living in Denmark is seeing new Danish cities like Vejle!
