VO The World Food Programme (WFP) extends support for mother and child health
INTRO: The World Food Programme (WFP) has forecasted a budget of over US$8.5 million in assistance for the 2016-17 fiscal year to improve the health of mothers and children in Laos.
STORY: A signing ceremony for the funding was attended by the Country Director and Representative of the World Food Programme in Laos, Madame Sarah Gordon Gibson, Minister of Health Associate Prof. Dr Bounkong Syhavong, and other health officials.
This support forms part of the 12-month project “Mother and Child Health and Nutrition Programme”, which is focused on improving health and nutrition in the three target provinces of Oudomxay, Luang Namtha and Xekong.
Currently the programme reaches 33,000 people with ready-to-use food, rice assistance, and education on good nutrition for healthy growth. Of those assisted, 16,000 are children aged 6-23 months while 17,000 are pregnant or lactating women.
The World Food Programme started its Laos Country Programme in 2012 and has contributed significantly to the National Nutrition Strategy, the Plan of Action, and other National Socio-Economic Development programmes.
