This video celebrates the launch of a new book created by my friends Kate Davies and Tom Barr. Their freshly published tome, Shetland oo : wool , textiles , work, celebrates the lives and labour behind Shetland's world-class wool industry. With words by Kate Davies and photos by Tom Barr, the book promises to be an amazing celebration of Shetland and the incredible people who live there and who work with da oo*.
I travelled to Shetland myself to do a documentary project called Listening to Shetland Wool; I thought that on the occasion of the launch of Shetland oo, it might be nice to bring the sounds that I recorded in Shetland together with the photos that Tom took there.
The photos and sounds in this video document include:
Jan Robertson baling wool (Shetland Woolbrokers)
Oliver Henry talking about grading and sorting wool (Shetland Woolbrokers)
Ronnie Eunson's sheep (Shetland Organics)
Sheep at Nortower Lodges (Nortower Lodges)
Elizabeth Johnston handspinning (Shetland Handspun)
Hazel Tindall knitting with a belt (The Fine Art of Fair Isle Knitting)
Kharis Leggate and Ella Gordon (Shetland Woolbrokers; Home is an Island; Ella Gordon Designs)
Ina Irvine handspinning (Shetland Guild of Spinners, Knitters, Weavers & Dyers)
Auctioneer and crofters at the Shetland Marts (Shetland Livestock Marketing Group)
Knitting machines at the Shetland College UHI
These are just some of the amazing people and businesses working with Shetland Wool in 2016. You can see and read about more of them in the book, Shetland oo : wool , textiles , work, and you can hear more examples of the sounds of Shetland wool by searching online for the project "Listening to Shetland Wool" by Felicity Ford.
